Dear Rochester Residents,

The Rochester Planning Board recently exempted a developer from installing safe sidewalks within a new 52 single-family home development on Jeremiah Lane.  Instead of remaining true to the vision of safe, walkable neighborhoods for all new developments that connect the city, and allow for safe passage of school children, families and residents with disabilities, the board voted to waive standard granite curbed sidewalks.  The unsafe, irresponsible and potentially devastating compromise the board approved consists of a wider street with painted lines to delineate a no parking zone.

What are the potential impacts? First, wider streets have statistically higher rates of speed that significantly increase the chances of pedestrian injury or worse. Second, a no parking zone will be self-managed meaning that violations will be reported by residents to the police department. This impact on our already short-staffed PD creates an undue strain on the force, reduced response times for legitimate calls and removes the friendly environment that Rochester neighborhoods need and want. Finally, if the new residents decide they want safe sidewalks installed at a later time, it would be at the tax-payers expense.  All of these reasons are cause to stand up and speak out.  Rochester deserves better than substandard, unsafe and potentially disastrous compromises to public safety.

What can you do?

Sigh this petition and let's show our city leadership that our shared vision of safe, walkable neighborhoods is a priority and we won't settle for any compromises - our children, our families and persons with disabilities deserve better.

It has been my honor to champion this fight, but I simply cannot do this alone.  To reverse the vote and bring it back to the board for reconsideration, they need to know the level of importance this is to you and your family.  Stand with me to take our city back.  Progress is possible, but we must be united and not give up. We're in this together.

My very best to you,

Jeremy Hutchinson, candidate for Rochester City Council, Ward 1
