The Goal. To convince heads of national addiction treatment organizations and private facilities to undergo a name change because of the stigma implied by the word “abuse”.

The Problem. Drug or alcohol addiction is unquestionably an arduous task. Part of what makes the struggle all the more difficult is the fear and negativity that surrounds it. A lot has been said about how and why the stigma from addiction exists, but part of it comes not from what people say but from how they say it. The word “abuse” or “abuser” implies that victims of addiction are solely at fault even though it’s really not that simple. Having “abuse” emblazoned on any addiction treatment center’s official name simply sends the wrong message, discouraging victims of addiction from seeking treatment.

The Solution. Acknowledging that addiction is a disease and not something that people choose to do is the first step towards helping those struggling to get back on their feet. It can take something as simple as a name change to persuade more victims of addiction to come forward and seek help. National addiction treatment organizations and privately funded institutions should drop “abuse” – and all the negativity associated with the word – from their official name if they truly want to make a difference.

The best drug rehab centers in the country can only do so much, especially if victims of addiction refuse to seek help. Let us eliminate the stigma. Help us open doors for those who have been on the fence about seeking help for so long. Sign this petition today.
