A planning application being considered by Bassetlaw DC is in danger of being refused because the Conservation team are against the proposal, even though the other eight of the nine consulted bodies (including the Canal and River Trust!) did not register objections, nor did any member of the public, and the proposal might not even be considered by the full planning committee, which seems unfair if many people might well consider the proposal to be quite reasonable.

The land in question has for decades been untended, overgrown, fly-tipped and dilapidated. Next door is a significant landmark building known as the old Bracebridge Pumping Station, which is grade ll listed, and the conservation people believe that the setting of this building, and its relationship with the Chesterfield Canal, will be despoiled by the proposal to create a nursery garden centre with garden buildings display area, tearoom, toilets, parking and a community gardening facility all within a contained area to the north of the Pump House.

This project would create employment opportunities, provide an attractive facility within the town boundaries, improve the appearance of the site, and if anything, address the decline of the area immediately around this listed building. We maintain that the Pumping Station is not threatened by the proposals.

The council itself sold this land in 1980, imposing a covenant that stipulated the purchaser must use the land for agriculture, horticulture, recreation and garden centre use only, and no other purpose whatsoever, the very use it now wants to prevent!

The garden centre buildings are to be "victorian" in character, grouped together well away from the pump house and at a much lower level, in a landscaped area separated from the canalside by a fenced 3-metre wide margin. Anyone wishing to view plans etc for the proposal can do so by visiting the council's planning website at bassetlaw.gov.uk and using reference 17/00803/RSB in the link for the public planning register.

I'd be very interested to know if you think the proposal is reasonable and worthy of your support. You can just say Yes or No if you wish, but please record your visit to this petition. Many thanks to those of you who've taken the time to read this!
